Both smartphones should receive the major update sometime this month

Last month, Sony Mobile confirmed that it would bring the latest version of Android to Xperia Z, Xperia ZL and Xperia ZR sometime this month.

After a series of leaks that culminated with the release of an early Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM for Xperia Z, the PTCRB has just certified a new firmware version for two of the smartphones mentioned earlier.

As XperiaBlog points out, firmware version 10.5.A.0.230 has just been approved by PTCRB, which means that it might hit any of these two smartphones in the next couple of days.

The smartphones in question, Xperia Z and Xperia ZL, are still stuck on a previous version of Android, but the good news is that the latest firmware spotted at PTCRB is a KitKat build.

Although there's no telling when exactly Android 4.4.2 KitKat will arrive on these Xperia smartphones, we suspect that it won't take more than a few days for Sony to kick off the rollout of the update.

Obviously, if tests don't go as planned, the update might be delayed and we will certainly see another firmware version being certified at PTCRB.

Anyway, we will keep an eye out for any additional details on the matter, so stay tuned for more info on when KitKat for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL drops in.
