Owners of a Nexus S smartphone on the network of wireless carrier Vodafone Australia can now download and install the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean software update on their devices.

The wireless services provider has just announced the availability of the update, informing users that all units on its network are expected to receive the update in about a week or so.

“The Android 4.1.2 update has begun rolling out to Nexus S devices around the world, and we’re pleased to announce that it will be available for Vodafone Australia customers as a Wireless Upgrade (OTA) in the coming days,” the operator announced.

The company notes that the update started to roll out today, October 18th, but says that this is only a maintenance update, and that it only packs a series of minor bug fixes and enhancements.

The new OS flavor brought various improvements to Google’s Nexus 7 tablet PC, but not all of them arrived on smartphones as well.

However, following the update, users should observe performance improvements on their devices, just as some owners of Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus in other markets around the world have reported.

The new update will arrive on Vodafone Australia devices with baseband version I9023XXKI1 and kernel version 3.0.31 -g5894150, while featuring build number JZO54K.

Before proceeding with the update, users should make sure that the battery inside their devices has been charged at least at 50 percent. They should also back up all important files on the device, to make sure that nothing important is lost during the upgrade process.

As mentioned above, the deployment will occur in stages, but Vodafone expects for all Nexus S units on its network to be updated in about six days or so. The update is being provided free of charge to all users, which means that they can choose to download it on the wireless carrier’s 3G network, should they want to do so.

“If you are not using a Vodafone Australia or 3 Mobile Australia SIM, or you are connected to any roaming network here or overseas, you will be charged at your applicable data rate,” the carrier also notes.
