The update can be installed via Samsung Kies desktop software

Samsung promised last month that all Galaxy S II owners would be able to upgrade their devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich by the end of April as long as they have purchased their smartphones from the UK.

Although customers who purchase unlocked phones are usually among the first to get these major updates, it appears that Samsung decided otherwise in this case.

The company confirmed that the unlocked Galaxy S II smartphones would be the last to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update in the UK.

This is why Three was able to deliver the upgrade among the first in the UK, along with O2 and Vodafone.

Even though Orange and T-Mobile have yet to make the update available to its customers, Samsung confirmed it has already delivered it and the carriers are now testing it.

The good news is that Samsung has finally managed to upload the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for unlocked Galaxy S II on its servers, which means owners can now start downloading it.

Samsung UK has been working as hard as possible over the last few weeks to get Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) rolled out to all our Galaxy S II customers. We can confirm that ‘XEU/sim-free’ and all network upgrades are now complete except for Orange and T-Mobile which will follow as soon as possible, pending software testing and approvals. Thanks again for your patience.” - Samsung.

Obviously, the update is only available via Samsung Kies desktop software, so those who already have the application installed on their PC should make sure they have the latest version, otherwise Kies won’t detect the update.

As for Orange and T-Mobile Galaxy S II owners, there’s no doubt about it that the update should make their way to their devices within the next few days.
