The new software update is coming to users over-the-air

Today, Australian wireless carrier Vodafone officially announced the immediate deployment of a new software update for the owners of a Motorola XOOM handset on its airwaves.

We’re referring here to the Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich software update, which is currently being pushed over-the-air to all XOOM tablets available on the wireless carrier’s network.

Unfortunately, the update is not free rated, which means that users will have to download it via a Wi-Fi connection to make sure they avoid data charges associated with it.

The new software weighs 116MB and should be pushed out to all devices within the next several days, the wireless carrier notes.

As mentioned above, this is the Ice Cream Sandwich OS upgrade for the Motorola XOOM, set to provide users with a nice range of enhancements.

The release notes of this software include:

- Easy organization of similar apps into a folder on the home screen - From the lock screen, unlock or go directly to the camera with a single swipe - The Gallery now offers a full photo editor - Users can also now save pages for offline reading - Updated look and feel

Unfortunately, the update does not provide Motorola XOOM users with the possibility to enjoy Face Unlock on their devices, nor with the option to snap photos with the tablet’s camera while recording videos.

Before proceeding with the update, users should make sure that the battery inside their XOOM tablets is fully charged, as the installation process will drain the battery life.

Moreover, they should make sure that all data on the device has been backed up, so as to avoid any personal file losses that might occur during the installation.

As soon as the update is available for their tablets, users will receive a notification on the matter, enabling them to start the download. For specific info on the download and installation process, head over to this article on Vodafone’s support website.
