Starting today, June 3rd, owners of a HTC EVO 4G smartphone on Sprint's airwaves would have the opportunity to download and install a new OS flavor on their devices, Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The mobile phone carrier has just announced the availability of this new software for manual downloads, and unveiled that it would start pushing it over the air to users on Monday, June 6th.

“HTC EVO 4G from Sprint will receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update through an over-the-air maintenance release beginning on Monday, June 6,” the operator notes in a post on their support forums.

Sprint will send update notifications to users in waves. The notification will let users know the update is available and provide the simple two-step, over-the-air download instructions.”

Starting with Monday, users would be receiving notifications on the download availability of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for their devices.

As soon as the update was downloaded, users would be prompted to install it. During the installation process, the handset would be disabled, but would be ready to use again as soon as the installation process is completed.

However, provided that there are users who would like to download and install the new update on their HTC EVO 4G handsets before Sprint starts sending it out, a download link would be available as soon as today, the carrier explains.

“For those who just can’t wait to get Android 2.3, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade starting on Friday, June 3,” Sprint notes.

“To access the update – from the home screen/Menu/Settings/System updates/HTC software Update. This will initiate the upgrade process.”

Not only would the update deliver the Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform version, but it would also offer a series of other enhancements for Sprint's HTC EVO 4G.

The software update was meant to add a series of fixes to the ability to stream media through certain applications on this mobile phone.

“This version of Android improves download management through the Downloads application, offering the user easy access to any file downloaded from the browser, email or another application,” Sprint continues.

“Gingerbread restores HTC EVO 4G’s ability to sync multiple Gmail accounts, display email attachments in the email client and fixes battery discharge issues.”
