A new software update is now available for the owners of a Nexus S 4G by Samsung smartphone on the airwaves of Sprint in the United States, one that brings along the Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread platform version on the handset.

The new operating system version was made available for download as software version GWK74, and brings along a feature that we reported on recently, namely Google Wallet (an application that enables users make mobile payments with their handsets).

Google has already announced that the new software will be released on devices via an update, and it appears that Samsung and Sprint already started pushing it out on mobile phones.

“Samsung has released a software update for the SPH-d720 Nexus S 4G,” the leading mobile phone maker notes on its support website.

“If your current software version is GRJ90, you will receive a network notification for the GWK74 software update. The update process will be performed OTA (Over the Air). It may take several minutes to complete.”

The handset vendor also notes that the new GWK74 software update will bring along a series of security fixes, in addition to offering users the possibility to enjoy the new Google Wallet application and service.

The new update will be delivered over-the-air to all Nexus S 4G users on Sprint's network, though it will take a while before it arrives on all devices.

However, the owners of a Nexus S 4G smartphone who would like to get a taste of the new OS flavor before Sprint pushes it to their handsets can already download it from Google's servers, here.

Before proceeding with the update, users should check the software version on their handsets through heading to Menu > Settings > About phone, and seek the Build number. To receive the update, the Nexus S 4G will have to run under firmware GRJ90.

The same as with any other software update, users should consider backing up all data on their handsets before kicking off the installation, so as to make sure that no important file is lost during the process. (via)
