Owners of Galaxy S II smartphones around the world can now download and install a new Android platform on their handsets, namely Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, now available as an unofficial release.

With over 10 million units sold to date, the Samsung Galaxy S II is the most popular Android handset available on shelves at the moment.

Its maker has just started to push the Android 2.3.4 OS flavor on it, but those who would like to try an even newer version of the platform on their handsets can now download Android 2.3.5.

As stated above, the new OS flavor is not an official platform release, and there are certain risks that those interested in giving it a try will have to take.

Available for download as firmware version I9100XXKI3, the new Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S II is dated September 15th, and emerged over at Sam Firmware.

To install this ROM, users will need to tweak their devices a little, and they will also have to be very careful while doing so, so as to make sure that all will go according to plan.

Also, they are advised to backup all data on the mobile phone, so that no important files are lost during the installation, provided that something might go wrong.

As stated above, Samsung is currently pushing the Android 2.3.4 OS flavor out on devices, but it might not be too long before the just leaked platform release will make its way to Galaxy S II units out there.

The dual-core smartphone is also expected to taste software updates past the Android 2.3.x branch, and might receive a major platform upgrade in the coming months.

Google is moving ahead with the development of the next major Android flavor, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Samsung will certainly make it available for the Galaxy S II, its current flagship smartphone.
