South Korean mobile phone maker Samsung Electronics is reportedly gearing up for the release of Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread on last year's highly popular Galaxy S smartphone. The leading handset vendor already started the delivery of Gingerbread for its Galaxy S users, but that is not the latest flavor of the operating system, it seems.

While Galaxy S devices are currently receiving the Android 2.3.3 platform iteration, the newer Android 2.3.4 release should arrive on them in the not-too-distant future.

Apparently, the company plans the release of this new software update before the end of the ongoing quarter, though no official word on this has emerged until now, it seems.

Samsung is said to have already started the testing of the new software update, and a leaked ROM containing Android 2.3.4 for Galaxy S was already spotted into the wild.

According to SamFirmware, which got hold of the said leaked firmware, dated June 3rd, the new OS upgrade should arrive on devices with appealing enhancements.

Some of the most important of them would be:

- Support for the Google Voice and Video Chat Integration - New GoogleTalk version - Support for Video Calling over UMTS Network - Performance Improvements & Hot-fixes.

Galaxy S i-9000 was launched last year with a front-facing camera in tow, and the Android 2.3.4 OS upgrade is expected to put it to good use.

Most probably, the unlocked version of this device would taste the new Android 2.3.4 software update at that time, while carrier-branded versions of the phone will receive it at a later date.

Samsung Europe is said to have already confirmed the fact that the new update will arrive on Galaxy S soon, with European countries being the first to receive it. A release date for international markets was not provided at the moment.

If Samsung indeed plans the release of this OS update for Galaxy S for the coming months, an official announcement should emerge in the near future.
