Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson came to the market about a year ago with the first handset it designed with Google's Android operating system on board, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

Brought to the market with Google's Android 1.6 operating system on board, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 started to receive the Android 2.1 software update since the last day of October, and is reportedly getting ready to taste Android 2.2 sometime during the second quarter of the next year.

According to the latest reports around the Internet, a company's official confirmed the upcoming arrival of the new OS flavor.

Here's what the said representative stated: “SE X10 will get the Android 2.2 update during the second quarter of 2011. Work is still currently ongoing on version 2.2.”

However, this should not be mistaken for an official announcement from the company. Nothing was announced on the upcoming availability of Android 2.2 for Xperia X10 is what Sony Ericsson would say on the matter.

There are great chances that the solution would indeed make it to Xperia handsets in the not too far future, especially since the company is also set to bring multi-touch to the device, although it announced initially that no such features would be included into the mix.

Even so, we should not hold our breath until Android 2.2 is being released for X10. Sony Ericsson has promised the Android 2.1 solution in Q2 this year, and delivered it only in Q4, and the upcoming 2.2 software update, if indeed planned, might be pushed back as well.

The Android 2.1 solution was already released for most Xperia X10 users out there, but there still are some who won't get it anytime soon. For example, US users who purchased the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 on AT&T's airwaves are included on this list.

Hopefully, the rumor on Android 2.2 Froyo for Xperia X10 would indeed pan out, so keep an eye on this space to learn more info on the matter.
