A final solution might not be too far

Taiwan-based mobile phone maker HTC announced a while ago that it would upgrade all of its 2010 Android-based devices to the latest flavor of Google's mobile operating system, namely Android 2.2 Froyo, but only Nexus One has received the solution so far. That would be the official version of Android 2.2 Froyo for the device, as unofficial ones are also available for Nexus One, as well as for other HTC phones out there.

Among them, we can count the Android 2.2 Froyo ROM from CyanogenMod. The first CM6 release candidate for the high-end 4G-capable device was released not too long ago, offering users the possibility to try a series of new features on their EVO 4G. However, it seems that not all functionalities of the handset are up and running, though a future release would certainly fix this aspect too.

Starting with what does not work for the time being, we can count the fact that protected apps are not seen in the Market, that 4G connectivity is not available, nor the FM radio or the HDMI port, and that Facebook contact sync is not working either. Moreover, it seems that those who would install the solution on their EVO 4G should not try overclocking the device, as the battery life is greatly diminished.

Since this is not an official software release, the installation of the CM 6 Android 2.2 Froyo ROM requires users to root their devices, in case they didn't install a similar solution before. We do not recommend rooting the phone, especially for those who are not familiar with the process, as things might result in bricking the phone. Moreover, rooting the device and installing unofficial software on it also results in voided warranty.

All those interested in the move do it at their own risk. However, in case there are some who would like to try out Android 2.2 on their HTC EVO 4G before the official release, they should head over to cyanogenmod forums to learn more on the matter. A video with the solution was spotted several days ago, which can be seen embedded below (via IntoMobile).
