14 DAY TRIAL // After a few months' wait, Samsung Vibrant, T-Mobile's version of Galaxy S, is being upgraded to the newer Android 2.2 Froyo operating system version, just as the wireless carrier announced officially only a few days ago.
The new update, available as build number T959UVKA6 (also known as KA6), was made available for download for all Samsung Vibrant users on the carrier's network via the Samsung Kies Mini application.
“A software update is available for the Samsung Vibrant. It updates the device from Android 2.1 (Éclair) to Android 2.2 (Froyo). This upgrade includes Wi-Fi calling, USB / Wi-Fi tethering, and various software enhancements,” T-Mobile notes on its website.
In order to update the Samsung Vibrant to the newest version of Android, one would have to download and install the Samsung Kies Mini app on a Windows PC, and to connect the smartphone to the computer via the USB cable.
One thing that Vibrant owners should keep in mind is that the update won't arrive over the air (OTA), which means that they would have to perform the process as noted above.
Moreover, the wireless carrier notes that no notification would be sent out on the availability of this OS upgrade, which means that users would have to download Kies Mini, install the app, and then do a manual search for the update.
Here's what T-Mobile also notes on the matter: The upgrade to KA6 is NOT required. You may opt out of the upgrade and continue using build number T959UVJI6. If you are still using build T959UVJFD (aka JFD), we suggest that you upgrade using this process for various software enhancements.
According to the wireless carrier, the update should not affect any data on the mobile phone, but users are advised to backup all of their personal files, just to make sure that no important ones are lost during the update process.
Apparently, some issues might appear during the update process, but T-Mobile and Samsung are working on solving them. Since Kies Mini is an application provided by Samsung, those who would experience any issues with it should contact the handset vendor for assistance.
