Multi-touch also on its way

A while ago, Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson announced that its Android-based Xperia X10 smartphone was bound to receive upgrades to newer flavors of Google's operating system, and additional details on the matter recently emerged. Xperia X10 is available for purchase with the Android 1.6 platform on board, but Sony Ericsson is getting ready to release the Android 2.1 OS version for it too, something that might happen in September, this year, it seems.

Xperia X10 was expected to taste the Android 2.1 platform, yet no specific information on the time frame when it should arrive emerged previously. However, this time around the release window has been confirmed by the handset vendor, as a recent post on mobiles.co.uk notes. The update will land during the second half of 2010, and September was nominated as the most probable launch window.

But this is not all. Those who already purchased the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, as well as those set to make the move in the near future, might expect for another update for the handset to bring a new feature into the mix, multi-touch. The mobile phone maker confirmed not too long ago that the functionality was missing from Xperia X10's specs sheet, but things are bound to change, it seems. The lack of multi-touch is not hardware-related, a source revealed, and an upcoming software update should enable users enjoy the feature.

A wide range of other handsets are already running under Android 2.1, and they do multi-touch as well, with others more expected to arrive on the market in the near future, and Xperia X10 might receive the software update a little too late. However, we should note that this is the first device Sony Ericsson launches with Google's Android operating system on board, and that it already registers demand on the market, which means that the upgrade will certainly be a welcome change.
