Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has just started the roll-out of a new software update for its Xperia X8 devices, bringing the operating system version on that device up to Android 2.1, in line with what the company promised to its users not too long ago. The company announced a while ago plans to start deploying the software solution for its Xperia X8 devices, but many were expecting for it to arrive only in late December.

However, it appears that the mobile phone maker actually managed to push it out earlier.

The software update should offer Xperia X8 users the possibility to enjoy enhancements similar to those who were made available for the Xperia X10 mini and mini pro, the company announced.

“The Xperia X8 follows pretty much in line with the mini products when it comes what to expect from the updated software,” Rikard Skogberg notes in a recent post on Sony Ericsson's blog.

“The things added besides the obvious step-up to Android 2.1 are the same as for the already started roll-out for Xperia X10 mini and mini pro.”

Rikard Skogberg also notes that there's no telling at the moment on how the update deployment will go on. Sony Ericsson will push it out gradually, and new posts on the said blog will keep us up to date with how things go.

“This is not because I keep things a secret or don’t want to tell you – it’s just that the final timing of when each kit comes is depending on different local and global approvals and therefore we don’t really have a detailed plan per kit but rather release them as soon as all needed approvals are in,” the said post reads.

Specific info on the Xperia X8 model numbers that should receive the software update now can be found on the aforementioned blog.

As for what the Android 2.1 upgrade should offer to users, here's a list of the main enhancements that Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro received: • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more • New backup and restore application with extended content back up • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1
