The wait seems to be finally over, as Verizon Wireless and Motorola are reportedly rolling-out the Android 2.1 software update for the DROID by Motorola. The update was promised about six weeks ago, delayed, started to be deployed about two weeks ago, and now the roll-out is said to have started for all DROID users out there. Of course, not all of them will receive the solution at once, but things are finally moving in the right direction, and the update should be delivered to all owners of the handset on Verizon's airwaves during the following couple of weeks.

According to some of the latest reports on the matter, the roll-out of DROID's Android 2.1 update started on Tuesday, March 30, and should continue until all handsets are updated according to the following schedule: - At noon on 03/30, 1,000 users will receive notification of the update. - At 11:59 PM on 03/30, 9,000 more users will receive the update notification. - After the first 10,000 users receive the update on 03/30, there will be a 24-hour period when no additional upgrades will be delivered. - On Day 3 (04/01), 200,000 users will receive the update notification at 11:59 PM. This schedule will continue each day thereafter until the update has been delivered to all users.

Some of the users who received the update already reported on the matter, and it seems that screenshots with the solution being delivered to the DROID are currently available around the web. Moreover, those willing to perform a manual installation of the update can do so, as the file has been mirrored on various sites. According to a post on the AndroidCentral forums, all they need to do is download the software, put it on the root of their microSD memory card, rename it to update.zip and then restart the device.
