Up until now, the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD conflict and the quest for the biggest and most protected disc has seemed to imply only Sony and Toshiba (and eventually the movie studios).
But as the launching date approaches, more and more companies are drawn to the soap opera of formats.
After Microsoft
and Intel criticized the Blu-Ray, a Microsoft official saying that the ultimate argument, the 50GB disc, exists only on paper, BDA, Dell and HP have aggressively responded to what they call erroneous statements.
BDA's press statement cites Maureen Weber, General Manager of Hewlett Packard's Personal Storage Business, as saying that Blu-Ray offers storage capacities 67 - 150% larger than the HD-DVD, higher transfer rates and a better interactivity.
Weber adds that the 50 GB disc is real and that it will appear together with the BD-ROM units. Moreover, there won't be any compatibility issues with the old DVDs because the devices will also include a red laser module.
