Word is that CEO Steve Ballmer is getting ready to announce a major restructuring plan for the Redmond empire he manages, with sources familiar with the matter hinting that some high-profile execs could even leave the company.

Gregg Moskowitz, a Cowen & Co. analyst, told MarketWatch that Microsoft urgently needed to reshuffle its business structure and said that the Softies were indeed making some progress with Windows 8.1.

Windows 8.1 is not really a game changing product, he said, so the company is most likely betting big on the reorganization plan that Steve Ballmer could announce as soon as this month.

“It’s difficult to say how substantive the changes will actually be. We see a great deal of inefficiency at Microsoft,” Moskowitz explained.

According to insiders, Microsoft’s future could rely on four different business divisions that would be in charge of the company’s main products, including Windows, hardware, and enterprises.
