Obviously, handhelds will still struggle as mobile gaming keeps rising

A new study from analyst firm Juniper Research reveals that revenue from the PC and console games markets is likely to decline in the next five years.

The firm's report claims that the PC and console total revenue will decline, from $46.5 / €35 to $41 / €30 by 2019, but that even with the decline, the sector will still account for over 50 percent of the global industry revenue.

The overall revenues from software sales on both PC and consoles will stay at a relatively healthy level, with PC games set to surpass console sales.

The study also talks a bit about handheld devices, which are bound to continue to struggle for footing and attract gamers, with the total revenue from the handheld area projected to account for under 2 percent of the total games industry sales by 2018.

The bad thing about this kind of reports is that they are usually all over the place with predictions, with many reports claiming PC to be dead a few years back, then consoles to be dead around two years ago, which reminds one that predictions are difficult to make, particularly, as the Danish proverb says, about the future.

Fortunately, time will reveal whether this report was spot on or whether it was just meant to sell itself through alarmist predictions.
