The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 could reverse trend in the future

David Cole, an analyst working for DFC Intelligence, says that at the moment, PC-based video game products are generating more revenue than home consoles, including the recently launched Xbox One and PlayStation 4, mostly because of a shift in attention from core players.

He is quoted by Gamasutra as saying that, “Among core gamers there is a heavy overlap with most console gamers also playing on a PC. The big difference is that consoles are now the luxury item and PCs are the necessity. Just a few years ago the reverse was true. This means PCs have the broader audience.”

DFC Intelligence says that it predicted that PC game revenue would be bigger than that created on home consoles in 2014 as far back as 2011.

Cole says that depending on the evolution of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, the situation might change in the coming years and that Sony and Microsoft have plenty of tools that they can use to capture the attention of core gamers once more.

For 2014, the revenue associated with the PC is expected to grow past the 25 billion dollar (17.5 billion Euro) mark.

Both Sony and Microsoft have said that their next-gen consoles are performing better than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
