Microsoft has started a new reorganization process that includes firing up to 18,000 workers following the acquisition of Nokia’s Devices and Services unit, but analysts across the world believe that such a painful decision was absolutely mandatory.

Analyst Daniel Ives at FBR & Co. had said in a note to investors that what Microsoft’s new CEO is doing right now is actually “cleaning up part of the mess that Ballmer left behind” after his retirement in February this year, so no one could actually blame Nadella for this significant layoff.

“We believe Nadella is using today as an opportunity to make sure that Microsoft is ready and well-positioned to embark on its next chapter of growth around mobile and cloud,” Ives said.

Sources close to the matter revealed that absolutely all Microsoft divisions would be impacted by this job cut, including the Windows unit which could lose a number of testers in the coming months.

As part of the reorganization, a number of product managers and employees would be requested to learn new skills in order to create a much smoother Windows development process, which in the end would help bring new versions of the operating system to the market faster than before.

Nadella said that all impacted employees would be notified in the next 6 months, but we’re receiving reports that most of those that are going to be fired have already been informed of this decision.
