The NPD Group is expected to show an industry decline for the month

Analysis firm Cowen & Company says that two of the high-profile launches of March, Gears of War: Judgment and God of War: Ascension, sold poorly at retail in the United States during their release period.

In an investor note quoted by GamesIndustry, the company says that Judgment only managed to move around 425,000 copies in one month, which is about one quarter of what Gears of War 3 managed on launch.

Sales for the new God of War are estimated at 360,000 units, a small number compared to the normal appeal of the franchise.

Cowen & Company states, “We had expected sales trends to improve in March due to a strong core line-up. Two historically strong franchises appear to have significantly underperformed.”

The disappointing performance of the two titles means that the gaming industry will likely witness another year-on-year decline when the NP Group announces monthly results.
