DFC Intelligence, an analysis firm tracking the video game industry, says that the Valve created DOTA 2, which is still in beta, is currently the most played on the PC in Western markets, overtaking the Riot created League of Legends.

GamesIndustry says that its data only includes so-called core games, which means casual and browser-based titles are not tracked.

League of Legends continues to increase its player base as the overall popularity of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas rises.

At the same time, DOTA 2 managed to gain market share more quickly than the team had initially projected.

Third place in terms of popularity on the PC was the MMO World of Warcraft, created by Blizzard.

The company has its own MOBA game in production, called All-Stars.

Games like Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2, Battlefield 3, Minecraft, World Of Tanks and Counter-Strike contributed to an overall increase in PC game popularity.
