Serbia's Ana Ivanovici stunned Martina Hingis in the Montreal Open final yesterday night. And it's not like anyone expected it, especially since the former world champ seemed to be heading for her 2nd success since comeback. Still, it was going to be the Serb's second triumph of her career, at the early age of 18.
One week to the US Open, Ana proved to have become a real contender for the Flushing Meadows title. And that's not because she managed
to beat Hingis in the Montreal final, but because she did it in style. After less than an hour, the scoreboard showed an impressive 6-2, 6-3 for the Serb teenager.
Ivanovic entered the match pretty confident and fired some powerful shots to break her opponent. And that happened 2 times in the opener, since the 18-year old managed to overcome Martina 6-2. The Swiss player failed to produce a convincing 1st serve throughout the match and that proved to be the key of Ana's success.
The second set went down pretty much the same, with Ivanovic ending the game with more than 20 winners. The triumph brought her to the 17th place in the WTA standings and gave her a great boost before the last Grand Slam of the season.
"From the first game I let her know I was going to be aggressive. It was important to stay calm and just play some good tennis. I just knew what I had to do to beat her. I just had to play my game. I just want to try and keep the same level now and see how far I can go. I'm just happy to do it right now and I'm really, really happy and excited", said Ivanovic after the game.
Reaching the final in Montreal also meant entering the Top 10 Players in the WTA for Martina Hingis. Still, the Swiss player admitted that it will take a lot more to win a title any time soon: "There are certainly some things I have to work on before the US Open".
