Planar Systems just released its latest desktop stereoscopic display - the SD1710 - which delivers, according to the manufacturer, enhanced image quality, high resolution, flicker-free viewing, ease of computer interfacing and a wide viewing angle that enables multi-viewer use, informs Bios Magazine, online edition.

The company has developed a dedicated stereoscopic 3D technology targeting imaging applications in geospatial intelligence and photogrammetry, segments which require 3D viewing to discern depth in the imagery and interpret spatial details.

"Key growth markets for 3D displays are in geospatial intelligence, scientific visualization and industrial design, medical systems and consumer monitors, such as for gaming applications," said Paul Semenza, vice president, displays and consumer electronics, at iSuppli.

Planar has also included another innovative technology into its monitor - the StereoMirror technology - which has been developed to provide enhanced quality stereoscopic image, as the monitor is composed of two 17-inch AMLCD monitors in an up/down configuration separated at a 110-degree angle.

Furthermore, a semitransparent mirror is placed at a bisecting angle between the two monitors that, when combined with special developed glasses, generates the stereo separation. In order to visualize the stereo images independent of position, the user will wear lightweight polarized glasses.

"When we first connected our DAT/EM Summit Evolutiona digital stereoplotter to Planar's SD1710, our development team was extremely impressed with the sharpness and clarity of the stereoscopic 3D monitor, rivaling that of older film-based analytical mapping systems," said Robert Bredlie, senior software engineer, DAT/EM Systems International. "Since then, the Planar SD1710 has received enthusiastic approval from our mapping and GIS industry clients."

Planar representatives said that the company has collaborated with BAE Systems, Boeing, DAT/EM Systems International and Matrox in order to exhibit and validate this advanced stereoscopic 3D monitor design. The officials added that the stereo displays are known to provide a more precise and faster method to extract the information needed by the user, being more advanced than the former 2D displays.

The SD1710 StereoMirror monitor and accessories can be purchased from Planar or direct resellers, and it comes with 1-year advance replacement service.
