OK, maybe she is not such a big mess as she was a month ago, but beneath the "back to normal" surface Amy Wino still bears the unmistakeable marks of someone whose life is still affected by drugs and alcohol. Amy was in the States this weekend to support her friend Kelly Osborne as she made her debut on West End in Chicago; despite looking almost elegant in a trenchcoat and sporting hot pink lipstick, some things about her appearance still make us worry.
Winehouse is still way too thin and one of her fingers was evidently red, swollen and obviously infected. And I don't think we have to think too far out of the box to realise this is most likely connected to Amy's notorious drug habits, which have put her in the hospital more than once and have brought both her and her musical career on the point of collapse. Her swollen finger also reminds us that Amy has some very strange preferences when it comes to injecting drugs and getting her fix - and it's going to take a long time before we can forget those images of her running through central London at three in the morning with her shoes stained with blood from the heroin injections she used to do between her toes.
And what's worse, it still looks like Amy is still in complete denial when it comes to the destructive potential of her drug habits. Instead, she seems to think that her real problem is alcohol abuse. "Drinking long-term is a lot worse than doing heroin. Alcohol's a real poison" she said. "Normal people spend time thinking, 'What am I
going to do with my life?' I spend my time drinking". Well, yes, that totally helps settle her fans' fears that an overdose might kill the talented singer, who despite not winning the Mercury Prize gave a stunning live performance and returned triumphantly on stage.
"I'm of the school of thought where, if you can't sort something out for yourself, no one can help you. Rehab is great for some people but not others" Winehouse stated, thus keeping up the stubborn spirit set up by her hit single "Rehab". Looks like it's still a "no, no, no" - and although aware that change has to come from within, she hasn't expressed any plans of actually taking any action. Talent, it seems, does nothing to improve your desire to survive - on the contrary.
