When she died a little over a week ago, aged just 27, British singer Amy Winehouse was in the process of adopting a baby girl from St Lucia, where she’d spent many months in a bid to make clean. The 10-year-old girl is now saying they were already like family.
Dannika Augustine, pictured here with Amy on one of her many trips to the island, is telling the British media that the singer took an interest in her case when she found out how she lived in poverty,
TMZ reports.
They became friends and, when she didn’t even expect it, Amy launched the adoption proceedings after speaking to her parents, of course.
Now, the girl says, she is faced with the reality of seeing the worst thing imaginable happen to her.
“Amy was already my mother. I would call her mum and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together,” Dannika says.
Becoming her daughter was now just a technicality, because they were already family, she says.
“I loved her and she loved me... She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London,” says the girl.
“I cannot believe she is gone. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me,” she adds.
Her grandmother confirms that Winehouse had filed the papers for the adoption. She also believes that Amy would still be alive if she’d taken Dannika to live with her when she returned to London.
Moreover, the singer had plans to return to St Lucia next month, presumably to take her daughter back home to London.
“Amy wanted to have a child so bad. If she had not died, there is no doubt she would be here in St Lucia completing the adoption process,” Marjorie, the grandmother, is quoted as saying.
“There is no way she would have done what she did to herself if Dannika was with her,” the grandmother adds.
Amy Winehouse was
found dead in her apartment on July 23. Cause of death is pending on toxicology results.
