Amy Winehouse Has to Be Stopped

The singer's father-in-law calls on fans to boycott her album to force her into rehab

Amy Winehouse and her equally drugged-out husband Blake Fielder-Civil have managed to gain a sinister reputation as Britain's most detested couple. And truth be told, there's good reason for that, seeing how both the talented but irresponsible singer and her side-kick hubby are known to do drugs regularly - not recreational drugs, heavy-duty stuff like cocaine and heroin, and lose it badly most times this happens. In fact, their destructive behavior has driven both their families to take desperate actions in order to stop them before they kill themselves - or each other.

Both Amy and Blake's family have done almost everything that is in their power to try to exercise some sort of control over the couple's actions. A few weeks ago, soon after Amy's hospitalization due to a drug overdose, Amy's mother Janice spoke out about her daughter as a young girl and about her decline into taking selfish decisions, losing contact with her family, self-mutilation and self-destructive drug-seeking behavior. It seemed that to no avail. Amy checked herself into rehab alongside her husband, but managed only a couple of days in the facility in Essex before leaving, checking back in and then finally checking out for good. Despite her family stepping in and coming together to basically babysit Amy and Blake in order to try and put some order into their lives, they still managed to rock the headlines last week after having a bloody fight over drugs in a hotel room in London that ended in a midnight chase down Regent Street. And now, while the couple allegedly quit Britain to have a few days of sun and relax on an unknown island, it's the turn for Blake's family to step up.

"I think they believe they are recreational users of drugs and they are in control", Giles Fielder-Civil told BBC radio. Blake father went on to say "Clearly they are addicts". Well yeah, well spotted. I believe that much was actually clear to all of us. He also claims fans should also send a message that makes it clear that "her addiction and her behavior are not acceptable. Perhaps it is time to stop buying records. It's a possibility, to send that message". Fielder-Civil also acknowledges that his daughter-in-law's record label, Island, should be more "pro-active in helping the couple to get better" and do something to stop the singer's career from spinning out of control. Let's not forget that Amy's addiction caused her to cancel many public appearances, including the North American tour scheduled for this fall and the negative reputation she built up for not being able to deliver a live performance because of her drug abuse will be very difficult to improve.

I have to admit I hadn't thought of that angle myself. I was all for "separate them and throw them in rehab" approach, but that's my extremist side getting the better of me these days. The funny-tragic side is that this "take the candy away from the baby" approach might prove useful too. In the end, it's a vicious circle - she's famous and the money she gets as a result allows her to fuel her drug addiction. But frankly, unless she becomes aware of just how much damage the drugs do there's not much hope for improvement. And ditch the husband - I agree, his dad's got common sense and means well. Too bad none of that did rub onto the son.
