Former corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Startup Business Group, Amit Mital, has been appointed as Symantec’s new chief technology officer (CTO). Mital takes the place of Steve Trilling, who will take up an operational senior leadership role.

The new CTO holds an M.S. in engineering from the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. He is seen as an innovator in several areas considered important by Symantec, including high-scale web and cloud services, big data and machine learning.

“I'm excited to be joining Symantec at such a crucial juncture in the company's history. I'm looking forward to working alongside Steve and our more than 20,000 employees worldwide to develop and deliver innovative point solutions and integrated offerings that will drive the industry -- and Symantec -- forward,” Mital noted.

At Microsoft, a company he has worked for for 20 years, his most recent responsibilities included managing strategic product development and identifying new opportunities for innovation.

At Symantec, he will report directly to Steve Bennett, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

“Amit is a leader with proven abilities to innovate, develop and execute new products,” Bennett said.

“We're on track executing roadmaps to leverage Symantec's technology to solve our customer's most important problems and Amit's expertise will help us move faster and more effectively in this stage of our transformation. We are thrilled to add such a talented executive to our leadership ranks.”

On December 1, Francis deSouza, who was working as president of products and services at Symantec, left the company to become the president of San Diego-based Illumina.

Since his departure, the IT security giant’s products and services leadership team reports directly to Bennett.
