While TVs are getting larger and larger, the means by which end-users can stream high-quality multimedia files are getting increasingly smaller, and Amex Digital just made the latest step in this direction, by unveiling the MP-501, supposedly the smallest HD media player on the market, measuring just 175 x 128 x 15mm.

Since it is a media player, it is meant to render audio, photo, video, playlist and subtitle files, and Amex provided even an USB port, to allow such operations.

Still, video files in HD or Full HD resolutions require a specialized interface, so the company naturally outfitted its latest creation with a HDMI connector and cable.

For those interested in the specifications, the electronic has, at its heart, an ARM Cortex A8 processor, as well as support for a very wide range of files, provided they do not have DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection.

When it comes to audio, the Amex MP-501 can play MP3, WAV/PCM/LPCM, WMA, AAC, FLAC, MKA, AIF/AIFF, OGG, AC3 and DTS formats.

Compatible photo extensions include JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP and PNG, and the product can also read playlist files (PLS, M3U and WPL), as well as SRT subtitles.

As for the videos themselves, the manufacturer threw in support for AVI (Xvid, AVC, MPEG1/2/4), MPG/MPEG, VOB, MKV (h.264, x.264, AVC, MPEG1/2/4, VC-1), TS/TP/M2T (MPEG1/2/4, AVC, VC-1), MP4/MOV (MPEG4, h.264), M2TS, WMV9 and Real.

As already mentioned, the small media player can handle not just HD resolutions (1,366 x 768 pixels), but also movies in Full HD picture quality (1,920 x 1,080 pixels).

Other relevant details include operating temperatures of 5° C to 35° C, internal storage of up to 32GB and compatibility with FAT32, NTFS and HFS+ external drive formats.

The compact media player weighs merely 250 grams and will sell for roughly $49. Full information may be found on the official
