The upcoming episode of Dr. Phil will bring to light the serious problems one former model has been struggling with for years. Her name might ring a bell – Jael Strauss – but chances are you won’t be able to recognize her from the 30-second teaser below.
Jael was on America’s Next Top Model, Cycle 8, in 2007. She didn’t make it into the final three but still stuck around long enough for people to notice her – and even root for her.
At the time, she was dealing with a personal drama, trying to get over her best friend’s death. Though the tragedy occurred after an overdose, it wasn’t enough to keep her away from drugs.
Jael’s family went to Dr. Phil begging for an intervention. We don’t know whether it worked or not and, for the time being, we only have this preview to speculate on.
“At 22, Jael was an aspiring model and finalist on the hit show America's Next Top Model. But at 28, Jael's family says she's losing her battle with drug addiction. Don't miss what happens minutes before she's to appear on Dr. Phil's stage. Can Dr. Phil convince her to stop running and commit to getting well?” reads a brief synopsis of the episode.
Apparently, Jael’s family told Dr. Phil that she’s dying because she’s a “full-blown meth addict” and will not listen to reason even if, deep down inside, she probably realizes that she can’t carry on like this forever.
In the preview video, the former model is shown gaunt, with bad skin and even worse teeth, acting violently, hitting the cameras as she rages against those very persons who are trying to save her life.
“Do the drugs get her and take her life or do we get her and save her life,” Dr. Phil says of the intervention, stressing he’s determined to help her family save her.
Jael is also seen running away from him right before the show, perhaps unconvinced that she’s worth saving or that she could make sobriety work.
“This is the first time in ten years I've come out here, [and it's] to talk to you,” Dr. Phil tells her, after he runs after her.
