The National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony has become a symbol for the American citizens during this time of the year. For almost nine decades, the event has increased its popularity and gained more and more followers.

President Barack Obama himself was expected to lighten the 19-foot-tall balsam fir. This is the fifth year in which energy-efficiency is an important part of the entire equation, since LED lights are incorporated in the lightning system of the imposing giant tree, Huffington Post reports.

This year we are able to spot a network of thousands of GE Color Effects bulbs, while the star placed on top of the tree reveals an extra-sustainable Tetra bulb. One Republic, Black Eye Peas and many others made sure the eco-conscious attitude is correlated with just the right amount of entertainment.

LED bulbs are an eco-friendly option recommended for homeowners. Experts say these products last for a longer period of time, are durable, green and cost-effective.
