America Ferrera reveals it takes staff about an hour to get her looking like Ugly Betty on the hit series

Earlier speculation might have had it that ABC’s highly successful and much appreciated series “Ugly Betty” was about to get the ax from the network because ratings had been dropping constantly, but America’s favorite ugly fashion insider is returning to the small screen this autumn. Betty Suarez is ugly and has the worst taste in everything, but she’s not so without an entire army of people working on her before the cameras start rolling, as actress America Ferrera reveals for the Daily Mail.

Anyone who’s seen Ferrera knows that she’s many miles away from Betty. She doesn’t have crooked teeth that require braces which, in turn, make her mouth look like a car crash, as the Mail puts it, she doesn’t have horrible hair and not the faintest idea on what to do with it, she doesn’t have spectacles and, most important, she doesn’t have the tackiest, most horrendous fashion sense. This is because she has an entire team of stylists and makeup artists who do that for her, Ferrera says for the publication, pointing out that being Betty is no easy task.

“Yes, people are surprised when they see I’m not like Betty in real life. Everyone knows that the power of good make-up, careful lighting and professional grooming can enhance beauty, but they don’t realize that you need all that to make yourself look, well, as ugly as Betty!” Ferrera says for the British publication. When asked about whether the public will ever see Betty undergo a drastic makeover and looking more like other people working in fashion, Ferrera is hesitant. As far as she’s concerned, that’s Betty’s biggest appeal with the public so changing it would be a poor decision.

Granted, that’s not to say that Betty will not change with time. As a matter of fact, Ferrera explains, to the trained eye, she has already started to do that. “Maybe because she doesn’t look anything special, people identify with her. […] Betty wins out every week against all those who are trying to trip her up. In her innocent, naive way she’s smarter than everyone else – but neither she nor they realize it. Betty’s worked on a fashion magazine for over two years, so she’s going to pick up tips about the way people dress, but she still does it her own way. If belts are in, she’s going to wear a belt, but it’ll be the wrong type. I don’t think she’ll ever be in a black Prada suit and contact lenses.” the actress explains.

As we also informed you a while back, “Ugly Betty” was put on hiatus to make room for two new brand shows, “In the Motherhood” and “Samantha Who?,” which instantly prompted speculation that the series no longer had the initial appeal and that ratings were dropping faster than the network could do anything about them. Later on, ABC announced that the series had been picked up for a fourth season, much to the delight of fans worldwide.
