14 DAY TRIAL // Amazon has been long rumored to plan the release of a smartphone, yet the company hasn’t provided an official confirmation on the matter as of now, and little was actually known on what the phone would have to offer.
However, a recent article on theinformation appears meant to offer some additional info on the device, suggesting that it is currently known under the codename of Project Aria.
Moreover, the company is said to have partnered with various OEMs overseas for expanded availability of the device, and that they might launch it in the United States on the networks of various wireless carriers.
The handset is also said to arrive on shelves with a platform similar to the FireOS loaded on Kindle tablets, which might be just another heavily modified version of Android. Google services will not be present on the handset either, which should ensure reduced production costs.
As SlashGear notes, Amazon plans on making the phone available for purchase in China, Europe, and the United States, but it might not release it in Latin America too.
Amazon is also expected to launch the device with a low price tag attached to it, contract-free. Thus, it will compete with handsets such as the iPhone much better, both in the United States and internationally.
