Amazon updates its less impressive Kindles too

A few weeks ago, if you wanted to pick up an entry-level Kindle, you had the option of grabbing a model that didn’t come with a touchscreen.

Well, since Amazon is busy updating everything in its garden, from eReaders and tablets to the operating system, the basic Kindle also got treated to a revamp.

The base all-new Kindle currently sells for a dirt-cheap $79 / €61 and brings about a touchscreen display and a new processor said to be twice as fast as the predecessor.

The new model has a 6-inch Pearl E-Ink display with 167 ppi and 4GB of internal storage. It’s just 0.4 inches / 10.16 mm (just like the Amazon Kindle HD 6) in frame and weighs 6.7 ounces / 190 g.

The eReader takes advantage of 802.11n Wi-Fi, so users can connect to it to download content from the Kindle Store.

The digital reading device is so cheap because it comes bundled with those pesky “special offers” that will be displayed on your home screen.

If you want to protect your sanity and get rid of them, Amazon is asking you to pay up a special 20 bucks (€15.53) (just like in the case of the Amazon Kindle HD 6).

You might be excited about the introduction of the touchscreen panel, but you should note that the new Kindle doesn’t offer some features that were present in older models, like text-to-speech conversion and MP3 audio playback.

However, the eReader will be offered with a dedicated cover.
