Amazon announces that it has purchased comiXology, a company that revolutionized the way digital comics are read with the Guided View technology. It managed to make discovering, buying, and reading comic books and graphic novels a lot easier than before.

“ComiXology’s mission is to spread the love of comics and graphic novels in all forms. There is no better home for comiXology than Amazon to see this vision through. Working together, we look to accelerate a new age for comic books and graphic novels,” said David Steinberger, co-founder and CEO of comiXology.

On the company’s website he also said that they’ve been striving to turn every person on the planet into a fan of comic books, and this crazy goal may actually be a possibility now that comiXology has Amazon’s help. “With Kindle, Amazon has shown a passion for reinventing the reading experience, just like comiXology has shown for comics and graphic novels,” Steinberger said.

For its part, Amazon expressed its enthusiasm regarding the acquisition by saying that the two companies had so much in common, including the passion for reinventing reading in a digital world.

The company’s David Naggar, vice president for Content Acquisition and Independent Publishing, is referring here to the slew of eBooks sold on Amazon as well as to the revolutionary Kindle eBook reader that set the trend among other similar devices.

“We’ve long admired the passion comiXology brings to changing the way we buy and read comics and graphic novels. We look forward to investing in the business, growing the team, and together, bringing comics and graphic novels to even more readers,” Naggar said.

ComiXology is a company that was founded in 2007. In the years that have passed, it managed to create a large library of digital comic book content from over 75 publishers as well as independent creators.

The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the acquisition comes with some closing conditions. The purchase will be finalized in the second quarter of 2014.

ComiXology will retain its identity, but it will turn into Amazon’s subsidiary from a legal standpoint. The company will also maintain its New York headquarters.

Hopefully this deal will be good for both companies and especially for comiXology, since Amazon really doesn’t have a lot to lose outside of whatever money it used for the purchase.
