Weird message sent by Amazon

It's hard to believe that Amazon, the famous website that allows you to buy all sorts of things, would turn to spamming in order to advertise some of the products and increase its number of clients. But when the company sends emails to the registered members even if they didn't subscribe to the newsletter, there is something unusual with the service. Matt Cutts, Google engineer, wrote that he received a weird message from Amazon although he is not registered for any type of email notification.

As we expected, the email message informed Matt about a special promotion that he received after his recent purchases were done with Amazon.

"Thanks for the recent purchase(s) you made in our Home & Garden Store at Amazon, you are eligible to receive a one-year subscription to the special Amazon edition of "Domino" magazine, a $12 value. This special edition is available only to Amazon customers and includes a special supplement, "Domino SHOPS Amazon," which features every month a set of must-have products at Amazon as selected by the editors at "Domino"," the email sent to Matt Cutts mentioned.

OK, let's suppose it wasn't a spam message but it was still an unsolicited email as Matt Cutts said that he didn't subscribe for any of the notifications. "I'm sure that Domino is a fine magazine, but I told Amazon not to send me anything promotional. So I checked my communication preferences on Amazon. Yup, they're not supposed to send me any emails like this," he said.

Maybe it was a phishing attempt? I don't think so because the Google engineer is experienced enough to discover a dangerous attack. I'm sure it was only a glitch but let's hope that the folks from Amazon will fix it soon because just like other spamming campaigns, they all started with a simple and unusual message.
