Aggressive pricing, scale and speed may have helped Amazon become the largest online retailer in the world, but great customer service probably helped as well.
In a great example of the fact that people like 'good news' stories just as much as the bad news one, a
story on Reddit about Amazon refunding an order, even though it wasn't its fault for losing it, has gotten over 600,000 reads in one day and pushed it to the Reddit front page.
The USPS lost a package from Amazon, after it had already been delivered, so Reddit user user zambuka42 wanted to know if there was a simple way of placing the same order again.
But Amazon offered to do one better, refund the order and place another one for him. The order was only worth $25.13, but it's gotten Amazon a lot more good will than any heavily funded marketing campaign.
