Today, Amazon has released two new firmware packages targeted at both 1st and 2nd-generation Paperwhite e-readers, namely versions 5.4.4.1 and 5.4.3.1, respectively, which include general improvements compared to previous releases.

This update can be automatically downloaded and installed via a wireless Internet connection. Still, if a Wi-Fi network isn’t available, you can also apply the new version manually using your computer and a USB cable.

Specifically speaking, download the proper .bin file compatible with your Paperwhite device on the computer’s available storage and turn on the Kindle.

Now connect the e-reader and the system via a USB cable, copy the firmware file onto the root folder of the Paperwhite’s internal storage, and make sure the transfer is successful – if the file isn’t saved correctly, the device won’t properly recognize the update.

Disconnect the Kindle from the computer, tap the menu icon from the home screen, go to settings, tap the menu icon again, and select “Update Your Kindle.” If the firmware hasn’t been transferred correctly or the device is up to date, the last mentioned option will be unavailable.

Now tap “Ok” to agree with the upgrade, and the Kindle will initiate the installation and display a “Your Kindle Is Updating” message. After the firmware has been applied, the device will automatically reboot, therefore wait for the Paperwhite to perform this task.

That being said, if you consider updating the firmware to these latest versions, from the links below, follow the one that best describes your Kindle unit, take into account all the aforementioned aspects, and “stay updated one minute ago.”
