At GameCon last week, Sony at last unveiled what was a long known secret for much of the public, the PlayStation 3 Slim, the new revision of its home console set to challenge both the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the Nintendo Wii for sales numbers during this holiday season.

Now, Amazon is announcing that the device, which can be pre-ordered on its site, will only be available in limited quantities when it is released and that the company is limiting the purchases of the console to one for every household. Amazon is saying that pre-orders are already significant in number and that more orders are expected this week. It has not revealed exactly how many people are getting the new PS3.

The PlayStation 3 Slim is set to cost just 299 dollars, only 50 more than the price of a Nintendo Wii, which is what analysts, videogame developers and gamers have been asking from Sony for the better part of 2009. The company is also saying that the new hardware is 30% lighter, 30% slimmer and that none of its computing power has been compromised in the re-design process. Power consumption is also reported to be down, allowing for less noise and better cooling.

Sony is revealing, through the voice of Eric Lempel, who is the operations director for the PlayStation Network, that it had planned to put out the PS3 Slim for quite some time, as the technology available for the manufacturing process became better and better.

The company has a long history of putting out updated revisions of its gaming hardware. Sony is hoping that the PlayStation 3 Slim will prove to be a hit with consumers and that the new design will allow the console to top the hardware charts.
