Yesterday we were telling you that Amazon seemed to have fallen asleep while its Kindle business was concerned. It’s been almost a year since the retail giant hasn’t updated any of the tablets and eReaders in its popular lineup, but through some weird magic the company has shocked itself back to life immediately after our report.

In an unexpected move, a few hours ago Amazon unveiled a whole bunch of novelties in the Kindle department.

Remember we told you that the Kindle Yoga eReader was spotted in listings on the company’s Japanese and German version of the site.

Amazon launches the Kindle Voyage eReader

As of today, the Voyage eReader is an official product, which goes on sale for $199 / €154. For this amount of money, customers will be treated with a touchscreen display coming in with high-resolution, a front-lit panel and nifty touch sensors that are built in the side of the screen so one can turn pages without touching the screen with your fingers per se.

The Kindle Voyage takes advantage of a 6-inch grayscale display with 300 pixels per inch and offers 4GB of built-in storage plus 802.11n Wi-Fi.

Like in the case of previous eReaders, Amazon also provides the 3G alternative, which naturally is a little bit expensive, coming in for $269 / €209.

Kindle Voyage is Amazon's most advanced eReader

Amazon will continue to sell the Kindle Paperwhite for $119 / €92, but if you want a thinner eReader with improved resolution and touch sensor on the sides, you’ll have to take a little extra money out of your pocket.

Speaking of thinness, the new Kindle Voyage measures 6.4 x 4.5 x 0.3 inches / 162 x 114 x 7.62 mm and is 8 mm / 0.3 inches in profile.

Compared to previous-generation eReaders, the Voyage is said to come equipped with an adaptive light sensor and brighter front light.

This implies that the new digital reader is 39% brighter than its predecessors, but users can fiddle with settings to produce the desired outcome.

The device is also capable to adjust the illumination level automatically, so if you’ve been reading in a dim environment for a while, the eReader will dim the brightness levels on the panel because it concludes your eyes have accustomed themselves to the situation.

The Kindle Voyage comes to compete with eReaders like the Kobo Aura H2O that arrives with a 6.8-inch display and 265ppi screen. It also sells a little bit cheaper at $180 / €139 (for the time being you can place a pre-order).
