In order to counter Microsoft’s entertainment apps on the Xbox 360, Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 3 owners from North America will now get to experience a special Amazon Instant Video application on their consoles.

Microsoft has turned its Xbox 360 into a lean entertainment center device thanks to an array of partnerships with content providers from all over the world.

As a counterattack, Sony has just confirmed that a special Amazon Instant Video app is now available for download via the TV/Video Services category of the console’s menu.

Like the name clearly suggests, PS3 owners will be able to enjoy all sorts of video content currently sold by Amazon through this app.

“Amazon Instant Video is available now on PlayStation Network, making the PS3 the first and only video game console to offer the service,” Sony revealed. “Head on over to the TV/Video Services category of the XMB, where you can download and install the new Amazon Instant Video app right now for free.”

“Once you launch the app, you’ll have instant access to thousands of streaming and downloadable movies and TV shows for rental or purchase. There are more than 120,000 commercial-free movies and TV shows for rental or purchase, including new releases, classic favorites, major TV shows, full seasons and even new episodes of some of your favorite TV shows the day after they air. Many of the DVD and Blu-Ray titles on Amazon.com are also offered on Amazon Instant Video available through this new app.”

What’s more, those with Amazon Prime memberships will also be able to watch more than 17,000 Prime Instant Videos that are currently available to them. The Prime subscription can be tried out as part of a free 30-day trial and you can just sign up for it straight from the app.
