Reading on a smartphone or tablet has become quite widespread these days, a trend that's being encouraged by the low prices at which ebooks usually sell.

But some of us don’t like the idea of reading on a small smartphone screen and exactly for this type of customers Amazon has launched a new service in India, meant to improve the reading experience.

So this week Amazon India said it was rolling out the Kindle Cloud Reader in the country, TimesOfIndia informs. This very neat feature allows you to read books from your Kindle library directly on your computer and all free of charge.

Books can be accessed when connected, but digital readers can also download content from the library that can be read offline at a later date.

The material you have just started reading will start downloading automatically, but you can also add other books manually to save them to your future reading list.

The Kindle Cloud Reader service is connected to the Kindle Cloud Reader website which can be easily accessed from there, as well as the Kindle Store. Therefore, you’ll be able to purchase books, download samples and free copies.

Basically, the Kindle Cloud Reader ports most of the Kindle apps feat to the PC. This includes the ability to synchronize the last read page of a book, save your books, notes and highlights, regardless of where you’re accessing content from.

This might not be a big deal for people usually reading on their desktop computers, but for those who own multiple devices and like to switch between them, it will come pretty in-handy.

However, reading comics on a large display might turn out to be a worse experience than reading on a small smartphone-like one. The problem is comics are still not optimized to be read on wide displays, which will results in zoomed-out images that look downright weird.

Nevertheless, if you’re not particularly interested in comics but in full-fledged books, you’ll be OK using the Kindle Cloud Reader. The service displays the book in facing pages and you are allowed to adjust a lot of parameters, including background color, test size and margins.

You can also make use of the regular Kindle features such as editing notes, highlighting text, searching for particular topics and sections.

Page turns are done swiftly and after you've achieved your goal, the control at the top and bottom will silently go away letting you immerse yourself in the story.
