Amazon has decided to launch its same-day delivery service in Canada, with Toronto and Vancouver being the first cities to take advantage of the new feature that is so loved in the United States.

The news comes months after the e-commerce giant initially revealed that it was seeking to expand its same-day offering to more US cities.

Of course, not all products are available for same-day delivery, but they’ll be marked accordingly. There’s also the obligation for customers to place orders as late as noon and receive packages before 9 PM the same day.

“We're constantly working to speed up delivery times and introduce new services that make our customers' lives easier. With Same-Day Delivery, customers in Toronto and Vancouver can conveniently take care of errands or complete holiday shopping in a day with just a few clicks, receive orders seven days a week and have what they need delivered to their home in a matter of hours,” said Alexandre Gagnon, country manager for Amazon.ca.

Better for Amazon Prime members

As mentioned, placing orders must happen before noon, which applies for all days of the week, including Saturday and Sunday. Amazon Prime members receive same-day delivery for a flat fee of $6.99 (€5.6) per order, regardless of how many items eligible for such delivery are in the shopping cart. Customers that aren’t part of the Prime group will have to pay $11.99 (€9.6) per shipment and a $1.99 (€1.6) per item cost for most items, the company said.

This will, most likely, get Amazon a few more customers to the Amazon Prime group, which offers quite a few perks, including free unlimited photo storage in the Amazon cloud, free two-day shipping, access to the movie and music streaming services, access to free e-books and so on.

With a $79 (€63.3) per year price on the subscription, many frequent shoppers are likely to pick this solution over having to pay extra each time they order.

There are more than one million eligible items for same-day delivery in Toronto and hundreds of thousands in Vancouver. The list includes popular movies and video games, as well as electronics, gaming consoles and accessories, household necessities, ranging from detergent to dish soap, and pantry essentials, such as snacks and drinks.

There are also other items, such as consumer electronic supplies like HDMI cables and speakers, or items that are essential for last-minute packing for the travels they may leave on.
