Astrophotographer Juan Carlos Casado captured some amazing images of the northern lights in the Arctic Circle. These marvelous shows of vivid colors have always fascinated people and many have traveled across the seas to see the incredible phenomenon.

The bright and dazzling Northern Lights are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun while entering the earth's atmosphere. The phenomenon, also known as Aurora Borealis, can only be seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres.

The most impressive thing about Casado's photos is the fact the they capture the moment when a dragon's head appears in the night sky. Shades of green lights create the shape of a mythical creature.

Other impressive shapes, like an ascending bird and an arching rainbow, were also caught on camera.

“Auroras make you relaxed and you dream like you are a kid. The movements cause changing and beautiful forms within minutes, sometimes with intense colors, and if activity is high their size can completely fill the sky,” says the photographer, according to Daily Mail.

“There is a sense of great joy to observe directly something you've previously only known from photographs or documentaries,” he added.

Some of these spectacular images were captured by the Spanish artist at the Qaleralit glacier and Tasiusaq and Qasiarsuq Inuit farms in Greenland, while others were shot at Hestheimar Farm in southern Iceland.

The photographer used long exposure to capture panoramic views, which were later joined together to create authentic images.

In the past, native people found different explanations for the Northern Lights. For example, in Greenland, people believed the auroras were their dead rising to heaven.

In the Aboriginal Australians' culture, the Aurora Australis is usually associated with fire, while in ancient Roman mythology, Aurora is the goddess of the dawn, who renews herself every morning to fly across the sky, announcing the arrival of the sun.
