Traditional web surfing with buttons and URLs at every pace is starting to become less and less relevant on mobile devices, and Opera is the first to break off ties with the old desktop model with its awesome Coast browser for iOS devices.

Officially released in the App Store for iPhone and iPad today, Opera Coast 4.0 builds on the foundation of previous versions with the same gesture-based approach, plus new additions, including Discover, Opera Turbo, easy sharing, Handoff support, and Landscape mode.

“Great content is what drives the web, and it’s what should drive a great web browser. We want to take our commitment to content a step further in the latest edition of Opera Coast,” says Huib Kleinhout, product manager for Opera Coast at Opera Software. “Browsers of the future need to treat the web like a candy store, and re-imagine the best way to help users find, access, enjoy and share their favorite content. There’s more to the web than the sites you visit every day and the first page of search results.”

Explore the web more efficiently than ever

With the new Discover feature, which Coast borrows from its desktop counterpart, users can find the stories they dig easier than ever. Swipe left and right to browse through the selection made just for you, tap to read the ones you like, and use the new share button to let others know what you’ve stumbled upon.

The new sharing feature is particularly important because it directly integrates with apps and services like Facebook, Twitter, Vkontakte, WhatsApp, Line, and others. Coast not only shares your URL instantly, but also turns the link into a styled image that resembles a postcard.

With Opera Turbo, also borrowed from the desktop but designed specifically for touch, customers can save a fortune in cellular traffic thanks to the smart compression algorithms that allow the browser to fetch just the necessary amount of data to display images, text, and video. It also enables a faster experience on slow / crowded networks.

Continuity and landscape support

Opera Coast 4.0 further includes support for Handoff, the cross-device feature part of the Continuity concept devised by Apple to enable iOS and OS X to transfer activities from one another. Coast now lets you pick up from where you left off on any of your devices where Opera commands web browsing.

On iPhone, Coast now finally support landscape mode. It may not be very useful on small screens – like that of the iPhone 5 or the iPod touch – but it makes a world of difference on the iPhone 6 Plus. Also worth noting is that users can now choose to open links in Opera Coast from Safari. Download Opera Coast 4.0 and enjoy.
