14 DAY TRIAL // Developed by indie studio Ustwo, puzzle game Monument Valley was released on iOS in early April and arrived to the Android platform two weeks later. One year after its debut in App Store, Monument Valley gets released on Windows Phone operating system.
The title was conceived as a touch game for tablets and it was developed over a 10-month period. Soon after its release on iOS, Monument Valley went to the top of the App Store paid apps chart, where it remained for more than a month.
It received the 2014 Apple Design Award and was named Apple's best iPad game of 2014. According to developers, Monument Valley sold 500,000 copies in a month, as well as one million copies in three months.
As of January 2015, the game had sold 2.4 million copies. In the same month, the folks at Ustwo came forward with an official statement claiming that the game had seen a huge amount of software piracy, with 95% of the installs on Android and 60% on iOS devices coming from unpaid copies.
Even if the numbers were pretty disheartening for developers, they confirmed they would continue to develop other games for mobile devices.
On the positive side, Ustwo reported that they exceeded $6 million in revenue from sales of the game as of January 2015. For your information, the development costs for Monument Valley amounted to $1.4 million.
One of the best puzzle games for mobile devices
Hopefully, the Windows Phone version of the game won't increase the piracy percent. Either way, it's a good thing that the third largest mobile operating system is now getting an important game like this one.
