Over the weekend, actress Amanda Bynes was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after allegedly scraping the car of a police officer, as she tried to get past it. Her dad insists she wasn't arrested because she was drunk.

Rather, Rick Bynes would have the world believe, Amanda was in a very troubled “emotional” place and that's why she was detained and held overnight at the police station.

In a statement to People magazine, the star's father insists that she doesn't drink – and much less so on the night in question, when she was popped on suspicion of DUI.

“She was not drunk. I was told that she blew a zero on the Breathalyzer. She didn't have a single drink that night. My daughter doesn't drink,” Mr. Bynes says.

Asked what he thinks is the reason Amanda was pulled over, cited and then taken to the police station, her father says it had nothing to do with being impaired by alcohol.

In fact, he explains. Amanda was arrested because “she was upset and very emotional.”

Mr. Bynes also thinks that people have a hard time believing Amanda is such a good girl because she willingly chooses to be out of the spotlight.

“She is a good girl. She just chooses not to work, and because of that, people go after her,” he is quoted as saying.

TMZ has a different story of what happened that night, though. Moreover, according to the celebrity e-zine, Bynes returned to the club where she got wasted that night, just hours after she was released from custody.

She was turned away at the door and not allowed in, because the management “didn't want to be associated with the actress in case she pulled a repeat performance,” TMZ reports.

Amanda and her entourage left without causing a scene, the publication claims.

The actress is due in court for the DUI arrest at a later date.
