Before the sentencing in the kidnapping and rape case of Michelle Knight, Gina DeJesus, and Amanda Berry, new details about their captivity emerge as their diaries are presented in court.

According to Miami News Day, the three victims of Ariel Castro kept diaries documenting the ordeal they have been through.

The pages reveal the torture and emotional and physical abuse they endured. The girls describe their incarceration as  a time during which they felt like prisoners of war.

They also wrote about being locked in a dark room and knowing that they would be raped. Sometimes Castro would chain them to a wall. The entries shed light on the man’s intent to bring in more young women.

“He appeared to be evolving in an ever more dangerous direction, capturing younger and younger women, telling his captives he was hunting for replacements,” reports Professor of psychiatry Frank M. Ochenberg.
