The color eReader craze seems to have engulfed manufacturers near and far, Aluratek's new 7-inch LCD Libre e-Book reader just popping up on the HSN.com website making it a pretty interesting option for those users that want a eReader that is also capable of playing back media files.
Although Aluratek has in its portfolio a wide range of eReaders, the Libre is quite different since it comes with a
full color LCD screen separating itself from the rest of its e-Paper siblings.
As a result this can now playback a wide range of multimedia files including MPEG-1, MPEG 4 (Xvid), Divx, H.263, H.264, WMV7/8/9, MKV, MOV, VOB, FLV video, although Aluratek doesn't go into specifics when it comes to the resolutions supported.
Apart from these video formats all sort of music and picture files are also supported as well as the pretty regular EPUB, PDF, TXT, FB2 e-Book formats.
However, a Internet browser or anything of that sort aren't provided as Aluratek decided to drop any sort of Web connectivity out of the Libre,
WiFi not being listed on the specifications list.
This forces users to upload books on the Libre by connecting it to their computer via the included USB port or through the SD card slot that can take cards up to 16GB is size adding to the 2GB of internal storage memory.
DRM files are also an uncertainty as the company has not provided us with anything that would make us believe this to be the case, so we are limited to non-DRM-ed content, Aluratek providing a bunch of documents's meant to teach users how to download content from borders.com or Harelequin.
As stated earlier the Aluratek Libre is available through the HSN.com website, the retailer listing this at $189.90, shipping and handling included, the
eReader also coming with a carrying pouch. (via
