Quality Management Systems (QMS) Inc. has developed what it calls the “Macpadd,” a mouse pad specifically designed for use with Apple's Mighty Mouse. The aluminum accessory features a patented finish design, providing superior tracking performance, according to the company. The Macpadd costs $24.99 (plus applicable taxes and shipping).

“MacPadd is a high-end mouse pad made of solid aluminum then anodized to our specification to provide superior mouse to screen tracking performance. This product has been engineered and tested, not just mass produced and punched out with a die,” says Quality Management Systems. QMS upholds that its pad eliminates the frustration of losing the cursor on the screen.

The company also claims that MacPadd has an antibacterial surface that can be easily cleaned. Owners can use soap and water, or antibacterial wipe to clean the pad. The aluminum surface is (allegedly) capable of reducing wrist fatigue with an ultra smooth surface that enables the mouse to glide. Still, you need some downforce to actually be able to point and click accurately.

Being made of solid aluminum, the pad complements Apple's notebooks, as well the aluminum iMac. Besides boasting a sleek design, the Macpadd is also highly durable, thanks to the material it is made of. According to Quality Management Systems, “It was developed to provide customers with a quality product that will last forever, not just a throw away.” Another design-related plus, as QMS points out, is that the company hasn't stamped its logo onto it, but just “modestly laser etched our Trademark on the lower right corner.” Nevertheless, corporate customers can have one custom made for them, logo and everything.

QMS even goes and touts its Macpadd as acting like “a shield in your carry bag against sharp objects and knocks during travel,” protecting your MacBook. Without fail, the makers of the Macpadd use every trick in the book, adding that “MacPadd’s manufacturing is established to reduce our carbon foot print. Our product is recyclable, should it ever be necessary or desirable.” Well, it is a block of aluminum...

Apple: We're Going to Fix MacBook Trackpad Issues

User opinions:

I just got a new MacPadd, and unfortunately, it isn't all I'd hoped.

Basicly, it does not function as a suitable surface for precision mousing, at least, not with my Apple Mighty Mouse. I've tried cleaning the MacPadd, and cleaning the gliders on my mouse, but it seems as if there are portions of the mousepad's surface where the mouse is unable to track properly, and the pointer will jump around erratically (although as far as I can detect, there are no irregularities on the mousepad's surface that are causing this). This makes the MacPadd unacceptable to me as a mousepad.

Additionally, I ordered a MacPadd "Pro" (9" by 9" pad), but instead received the 9" by 6" product, so there are some issues with the order fulfillment process as well.

Ultimately, I cannot recommend this product, as much as I was hoping I'd love it.

I also ordered and paid for the 9" x 9" MacPadd Pro from MacPadd.com and received the smaller 9" x 6" Macpadd instead without explanation! I have the same jumping erratic pointer problems.

This company has failed to respond to any of my telephone or email inquiries.

Definitely do NOT buy this product!
