Natanael Copa has been happy to announce today, May 26, the immediate availability for download of the Alpine Linux 3.2.0 operating system, which includes several attractive new features.

According to the release notes, Alpine Linux 3.2.0 is the first in the 3.2 stable series of the distribution and it is being built with the musl libc standard library, which means that it's not compatible with the 2.x series of the distribution.

"We are pleased to announce Alpine Linux 3.2.0, the first release in v3.2 stable series. This release is built with musl libc and is not compatible with v2.x and earlier, so special care needs to be taken when upgrading," reads the official announcement.

Users are instructed to read the official documentation of the distribution, which includes detailed information on how to perform a proper upgrade from previous versions of Alpine Linux to the new 3.2 branch.

MATE 1.10 and Xfce 4.12 desktop environments are included

While Alpine Linux is being known as a text-mode distribution, the release notes suggest that it now includes the latest MATE 1.10 and Xfce 4.12 desktop environments, along with the long-term supported Linux 3.18 kernel.

As expected with any new release, many of the core components were upgraded to their latest versions. These include GCC (GNU Compiler Collection 4.9.2), musl 1.1.9 with fortify, MariaDB 5.5 (replaces MySQL), Postfix 3.0 mail server, Lua 5.3, Ruby 2.2, and Xen 4.5.

Also, the Freeradius3 package was renamed Freeradius, and the Samba 4.2, Qt 5.4, Kodi (formerly XBMC Media Center) 14.2, LibreOffice 4.4 office suite, MATE 1.10 desktop environment, as well as the Xfce 4.12 desktop environment are included.

Moreover, Alpine Linux 3.2.0 comes with the latest Mozilla Firefox 38.0 ESR web browser, Evince 3.16 document viewer, VLC Media Player 2.2, InkScape 0.91 vector graphics editor, Audacity 2.1 audio editor, X.Org Server 1.17 display server, and virt-manager 1.2 virtualization software.
